Continuation of Snowmageddon, Field Trips, Otter Trip and other fun

We started the month of March by being buried in snow.  We had between 4-5 feet of snow fall between the end of February and the beginning of March.  Camp was without power for 7 days.  It was an adventure.  Zane has loved playing in the snow, shoveling it around and building snow caves.  A week after all the snow we had torrential rains that caused flooding because the snow didn't allow the water to run in the normal places.

This is actually the road that goes up and around the shop

The creek filled up again and ran over the top of the dam

The view out my front window, it was solid snow from the roof to the porch

All this crazy weather made driving down to the valley an interesting adventure.  Multiple times we were trapped at camp for a day at a time while mudslides and bridges were repaired.  Even now there is a lot of mud and water running over the road.

One of the bridges on the way down the hill, it's repaired enough to go over it, but still needs a lot of work

Between all the crazy weather events we managed to make it down to the valley for a few field trips.  The first was to the Children's Museum and the other was to play kickball.  Half way through kickball the kids turned it into a kids versus the parents game, so Casey got to play against Zane!

Casey and his coworker Josh were asked to teach a two part class about chainsaw maintenance/troubles shooting and basic tree felling at the annual CCCCA(Christian Camps and Conference Center Association) conference.  He had a great time teaching others about chainsaw safety.  They were supposed to demonstrate falling a problem tree, but the tree they were given was too dangerous(a great learning lesson on when to walk away).

We finished the month by doing Zane's Otter trip that he was given for Christmas.  He has been really interested in Otters this year.  It was supposed to happen at the beginning of the month, but had to be rescheduled due to weather.  The weather was still a bit crazy, but we had a wonderful time.  We stayed in a camping yurt in the redwoods and had daily adventures.

Zane liked this spot best in the yurt, Casey wasn't as impressed

Casey and Zane headed out on their kayak tour in Elk Horn Slough.  The saw lots of sea otters and seals

We spent some time at a few beaches, the last day it was warm enough for Zane to really get wet.  On our last day we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and did 17 mile drive at Pebble Beach.

The last celebration for the month was Zane doing a reading challenge with our school and Nothing Bundt Cakes.  He had to read 400 minutes to get a free mini cake.  This was a really big thing for him because reading is a big struggle, but he was excited to win the prize.  He did great and finished a few days early and read 412 minutes for the month!!

Way to go Zane!!

We hope you are all enjoying your spring.  Out March came in like a lion and it looks like a lamb with all the snow on the ground...  The valley is beautifully green and the wildflowers are in bloom so it's really wonderful to enjoy that on our way to town.  May all of you have a blessed Easter.
